Five Things to Remember When Getting Ready for Your Sunrise Session

January 17, 2012

One of my most favorite times to photograph an engagement session is at sunrise. I know, you are shocked and horrified because sunrise is like 6 something in the morning. Yes, yes it is. And thankfully I am a morning person and can handle getting up at 4 or 5 in the morning to get ready for the session. Here are a few tips for getting ready for your sunrise session:

1.) Get up an hour and a half before you have to be at your session location. It may not take you that long to get ready to go, but I have found if you’re up and moving an hour and half before you have to be photographed you are able to function much better, process directions faster and you look more happy and awake than if you get up half an hour before you get in front of a camera.

2.) Eat something. Do not ever come to any session without eatting. Food will wake you up a bit, keep you from fainting and it will make you a happier person if you are not hungry and constantly listening to your tummy growl. I recommend some fruit, especially apples and oranges. They tend to give you a bit more energy.

3.) Have everything you are going to wear laid out the night before and ready to go…even your makeup. Make sure you turn your lights on to check how your clothes look, your makeup and your hair. Not just one little light but illuminate the whole room. I know, it’s early, the lights are too bright, but really, it is important to check how you look.

4.) Go to bed early the night before. You will be getting up earlier than normal (at least some of you will) so go to bed that much earlier. You may not be able to fall asleep that early, but laying in your bed and resting will help. People often travel for an hour or a few hours to have a photo session with me. That means you’ll be getting up even earlier to make it to our location by sunrise. Take that into account…you need your sleep or you will have dark circles under your eyes and you will look tired in your photos.

5.) Don’t eat anything after you brush your teeth and don’t drink anything that is not clear after you drink (this includes coffee so drink up before you get ready). There are two reasons for this. First, you don’t want it to stain your teeth or lips. That would not be pretty in photos. Second, you don’t want to spill it on your clothes. That also would not look good in photos. Clear liquid (water) will dry and not stain. Coffee, tea, juice, etc will stain. Another reason to get up early…you get everything done before you leave to come to your session and have plenty of time to get whatever you need done. (And of course you can bring your coffee in a thermos for AFTER your session, but don’t drink it in the car on the way to our location.

Have more ideas for good ways to get ready for your sunrise session? I’d love to hear them…comment below!!
